I love the movie
Snapshots, close-ups, suspenseful sounds and vivid colors are sick. It’s a very slick looking style. Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley are great in The Substance. The story is actually original in some ways. It feels a bit Requiem for a dream-y at one point (but a worse and gore version).
What was the purpose?
For instance, with close-ups, a quick separation between two stories and, of course, disgusting needle marks. But there is enough going on in the film. Maybe I’ll go watch it again and walk out in the last 20 minutes. The first part is awesome. The last episode wasn’t necessary at all.
To create a shock effect or arousal disgust?
The movie completely lost my attention at that point. Check out our list of exciting new films from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, New York Film Festival and more.
