Carla Sophie Gascon talks about the two-year preparation for this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to portray as Emily and Manita. Jacques Audiard said that the idea for the musical was inspired by a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who wants to change his identity.

I’m speechless… I guess all the positive reviews are from people who a) don’t speak Spanish and b) wanted their caricatures of Mexicans and transgender people to be validated. The dialogue is unbearable, no one speaks it, the music sounds stupid, the accents (although Zoe Saldana clearly puts in a huge effort.
Let’s not even talk about Selena) are bad
The movies feel so unnatural not only because of the presentation, but also because of how they are used. It was clearly written by someone with a vague knowledge of Mexican culture, but that’s definitely not enough to make anything good. The only thing this movie has going for it is that it is undeniably beautiful.
Mexicans should avoid it at all costs
